2019 has been an average year for gamers. There have been some brilliant games launch this year but, then again, there have also been some duds. We are here to help you avoid those duds.

Nothing really blew us away this year in terms of videogames but that is to be expected. We are nearing the end of the current generation’s console life cycle and rumours are circulating that the new Xbox and PlayStation will launch in November, 2020. So, it makes sense that maybe the bigger game companies are holding out for the next generation.
However, that doesn’t mean that this was a bad year. This year’s Call of Duty is the best we’ve ever played and The Outer Worlds was a breathe of fresh year after the failure that Fallout 76 was.
The following games may not be terrible but there are definitely better options out there, so we’ve included those recommendations. Here are the games you should definitely NOT get someone for Christmas.
Fallout 76
Fallout 76 was supposed to be Bethesda Softworks’ answer for a Fallout themed MMORPG, but what players got instead was an empty world with scattered lore built into a glitchy, and barren, open-world.
There have been a tonne of updates and patches since the game launched but it was too little too late to save the game. But on the bright side, you can pick it up for dirt cheap.
We instead recommend: World of Warcraft Classic, The Outer Worlds
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
This game is described to be buggy, boring and pointless by those who truly were excited for it, like AngryJoe. Ghost Recon: Breakpoint essentially offers the player a massive sandbox for multiplayer shoot outs, but like Fallout 76, it ultimately lacks purpose and polish. The game, still today, is pretty buggy and the game modes are uninventive.
You might get some fun out of this game if you have a wild imagination; it’s kind of like playing with toy soldiers.
We instead recommend: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Anthem
Anthem died off so quickly. The game’s failure most mostly due to uninspired, unmotivated and lazy developers who took too much sick leave for ‘mental health’ reasons. The final result was mediocre third-person shooter with a forced online co-op mode. But hey, at least you get jetpacks!
Anthem became such a meme that even Aussie retailer JBHiFi took a crack at and dropped it down to bargain bin price after a few months.
We instead recommend: The Division 2, Destiny 2: Shadowkeep
Need For Speed: Heat
So many people were hyped when Electronic Art’s first teased NFS: Heat. At first glance it really looked like it was going to be the new Underground game but it’s nowhere close to that good.
The idea of zooming around an open world in your souped up ride and being chased by cops down busy city streets sounds sick but it isn’t that much fun in NFS: Heat. The cops are just over-powered vehicles that try to ram you off the road, there’s no realism here… and the open world, although breathtakingly beautiful, feels dead.
We instead recommend: DiRT Rally 2.0, Forza Horizon 4
Apex Legends
Wait, what? Apex Legends is bloody awesome, so why is it on this list? This game is only on the list to remind people that it is free-to-play! A lot of parents got caught in the Fortnite scam last Christmas when they thought they had to buy a copy from their local game shop. It is really misleading because you will see store shelves packed with Apex Legends boxes.
The game is free-to-play on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. You don’t need to buy it! If you see a copy on a shelf remind yourself that all you are paying for is in-game money that you can use to give your character some pointless cosmetic items.
We instead recommend: Only buy this if you want pointless in-game cosmetic items.
