Felix in The Outer Worlds seems to be inspired by PewDiePie

Date:

After accepting his request to be a crew member on board of The Unreliable, Felix became a huge part of my story. Felix, the outspoken and confrontational crew member, reminds us so much of someone with the exact same name… PewDiePie. Is the character inspired by him?

The Outer Worlds is an amazing roleplaying game developed by Obsidian Entertainment that delivers a impacting story. The game is set in an alternate future that diverged in 1901, when then, the current serving U.S. President, William McKinley, isn’t assassinated by Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition. The outcome means that Theodore Roosevelt never succeeded him; this allowed large business trusts to dominate society well, where megacorporations began colonising and successfully, and unsuccessfully, terraforming alien planets. A space craft known as The Hope that was bound for the deepest depths of space, failed on its mission and was stranded on the outskirts of the Halcyon solar system. The player character awakens on board from cryosleep only to find that most of the passengers are still in hibernation, and begins a journey to a nearby colony to investigate the true nature of the corporations.

On your journey through space you will meet many interesting characters, some that will even become part of your crew and will ultimately leave a lasting impact on you and may even affect your decision making at later stages of the game. One of these characters is a stowaway called Felix.

At first I was very hesitant to allow him to serve as crew on my ship because of his blatant disregard for authority — after all, Felix is a bit of a revolutionary — but he seemed likeable enough for me so I welcomed him on board The Unreliable.

After getting to know him a little better I couldn’t but help think that this Felix character might be Obsidian Entertainment’s cheeky little nod to the largest let’s play YouTuber ever, PewDiePie.

Not only does the character look like him but he also shares the first name of the famous Swedish YouTuber, Felix Kjellberg. And although their surnames don’t match there is a solid connection between the two. Kjellberg loosely translated means ‘spring mountain’. It is also a very common name among old Swedish labourers, like farmers, who lived in harsh conditions. The character’s surname is Millstone, which is a tool used by farmers and metal workers to either grind grain or minerals, further connecting him to PewDiePie.

Felix Kjellberg: PewDiePie in The Outer Worlds

The content creator has self-governed his entire life and crafted his own path to success going against the norm. Dropping out of University and quitting his career job just so he can truly be free to make his own decisions. He succeeded, PewDiePie bypassed the system and ignored the norms and today is an international superstar with an army of a following.

Felix Millstone has a bit of a mouth on him. PewDiePie is known for letting some bad words slip from time to time getting him in a lot of trouble. The YouTuber got shunned by his mega-corporation partner, Walt Disney, after a simple joke was taken out of context.

Is PewDiePie in The Outer Worlds?

It is possible that Obsidian Entertainment were hopeful that PewDiePie would do a let’s play series of their game on his channel and so decided to cleverly inject him into the game. I’m sure that I’m not the only one who thinks the resemblance between the two is uncanny.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Felix is, at least a little, inspired by Felix Kjellberg aka PewDiePie? If you haven’t played the game already do yourself a favour and pick it up as soon as you can; The Outer Worlds is a top contender for our Game of the Year.
