Killzone might be creeping back onto PlayStation’s radar, but the most important part of this story is the word might. A new report claims a very early project exists, with outside help involved, while Sony and Guerrilla Games have yet to announce anything.
The rumour arrives at an awkward time for fans of the Helghast. Guerrilla has just announced Horizon Hunters Gathering, and recent reporting says that project is now the studio’s main priority after a substantial rethink. In other words, a possible Killzone return is not the same thing as a game that is close to release.
What the new Killzone rumour actually says
MP1st’s report, amplified by other gaming outlets, places the alleged project in the very early stages of production. The reporting also points to an external studio working alongside Guerrilla, although the story does not establish a public title, release window, platforms or a formal Sony green light.
That is a thin but interesting slice of information. Early projects can change direction, lose staff, or disappear entirely before a publisher decides there is something worth showing. Until PlayStation or Guerrilla speaks, this belongs in the rumour cupboard rather than the release calendar.
Guerrilla’s public focus is still Horizon
Guerrilla’s own announcement describes Horizon Hunters Gathering as a three-player co-op action game built around tactical machine hunts. The studio’s news feed does not announce a new Killzone, and there is no official confirmation attached to the new report.
GameDeveloper’s reporting and Gematsu have also described a major rework of Horizon Hunters Gathering after negative playtest feedback, with the game’s future taking priority over other possible projects. That context makes the rumour more believable as a long-term possibility, but less believable as an imminent reveal.
Why fans still care about a return
Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 built their identity around weighty firefights, dense industrial spaces and lighting that made every corridor feel like it was carrying bad news. The series was never just another clean sci-fi shooter; it had mud under its fingernails.
PlayStation’s own launch-trailer coverage highlighted the franchise’s tactical, visceral combat and its push toward higher-fidelity visuals on PS4. That history explains the excitement, but it does not confirm what a new game would be, who would make it, or whether Sony even wants to revive the series.
Don’t expect a reveal just yet
For now, the honest headline is simple: a report says a new Killzone project may exist in very early development, potentially with an external partner. Guerrilla’s announced work remains Horizon Hunters Gathering, and the studio has not publicly confirmed the rumour.
If the Helghast are genuinely marching back, they still have a long road through the fog before they reach a PlayStation showcase. Fans can hope; everyone else should keep the receipts.
