John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando has received its second free update, adding a new extraction-style activity called Retrieval alongside fresh enemies, weapons, cosmetics and wider gameplay improvements.

The update launched on September 2 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is free for all players, according to Focus Entertainment’s official announcement.

Retrieval turns zombie killing into an extraction run

Retrieval asks players to choose a map, collect relics and make it to an extraction point before the pursuing hordes overwhelm the squad. Moving too slowly also attracts the attention of the Sludge, giving the mode a clear risk-and-reward rhythm rather than another straightforward zombie clear-out.

The mode launches with four playable maps: Church of the Damned, High Octane, Impasse and Demon Bait. That spread should give returning groups several different routes and pressure points to learn while chasing cleaner extractions.

Goblins can bring each other back

The update also introduces Goblins, small infected enemies that attack in groups of three and focus on the same target. Their most disruptive trick is revival: as long as one member of the trio remains alive, it can bring the others back. Squads will need to finish the whole group instead of assuming a downed enemy is out of the fight.

Players get four new tools for the job: the Le Clairon assault rifle, a Flamethrower, the Thunderstick and the Saw Trap. The additions broaden both direct firepower and area-control options, which should matter when relic carriers need room to reach the extraction point.

The free update goes beyond one mode

Retrieval arrives with the ability to Dash, Trials Season 2, local PC servers, and improvements to vehicles and AI-controlled bots. Focus has not framed the release as a balance patch alone; it is a broader quality-of-life pass built around a substantial new activity.

A separate Cosmetic Pack 2 is also available and is included in the Bloody Season Pass. Its character outfits, headgear, weapon skins and vehicle skins take inspiration from the Sludge God. New profile titles and icons are part of the update as well.

The release continues a busy run for Saber Interactive, the studio behind the off-road construction sandbox RoadCraft. Saber’s horror catalogue also includes Hellraiser: Revival. For Toxic Commando players, though, the immediate draw is simple: Retrieval gives an existing squad a new objective, new threats and a reason to coordinate beyond surviving the next wave.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando and the free Retrieval update are available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
