Hungry Jacks, better known to our International readers as Burger King, is now officially Doublemeat Palace according to Buffy fans.
The following may seem like a plot to a movie, but it isn’t; “It’s not every day you see scientists backing product development by fast food giants. But Australia’s scientific research agency, the CSIRO, is doing exactly that, as it announces its venture capital arm is launching a company with the owner of iconic burger chain Hungry Jack’s.” That’s right. A bunch of mad-scientists got together the Hungry Jack’s/Burger King to produce the ultimate meatless patty — they’ve even given this new project a name, and it is called v2food!

“We want to create an alternative version of the classic Whopper that Australians know and love, at a price ordinary consumers can afford, to answer to the environmentally sustainable movement that we’re now seeing,” Cowin said in a statement announcing the joint venture. “v2food will draw on the world-leading food science expertise of CSIRO to help pave an eco-friendly future, and we’re proud that Competitive Foods will play an active role in bringing the future of food to the mass consumer market.”
Why is Burger King called Hungry Jacks in Australia?
The short version: Jack Cowin was the first Burger King franchise owner in Australia but the Burger King trade name was taken. Burger King let him choose from a list of name’s they owned the trademark too, Jack chose Hungry Jack and later added the “‘s”. Later the name became available and Burger King tried to open their own stores competing with Hungry Jack’s in Australia and they didn’t honour his franchise contract. Jack sued them and won and now Hungry Jack’s is the official trade name for Burger King in Australia.
Now, the v2burger is out and actually has a name, The Impossible Burger. Get it? Because these mad scientists have done the impossible, make a vegan burger taste exactly like real meat, or so they allege.
Buffy fans were quick to connect the dots. “Baby Sarah would approve.”
Little Buffy in Burger King Commercial
Before Buffy, an adorably little Sarah Michelle Gellar appeared in a Burger King commercial back in 1981. Does she look 20% smaller to you guys, too?
Buffy thinks she smells something rotten after she takes a job at a fast-food restaurant that soon has her wondering about the “secret ingredient” in the burgers. Hurting for cash, the Slayer takes a job at Doublemeat Palace, where her fellow employees don’t respond well to her sense of humour. “Levity is a time thief that picks the pocket of the company,” explains one co-worker. But it’s Buffy’s growing concern that something demonic might be going on that really turns her stomach.

In the end, the real demon at play was trickery and deception! These Doublemeat medley burgers, although tasting like meat, weren’t made of meat at all… they were made of.. wait for it… vegetables! Doublemeat Palace had found the perfect formula for vegan burger patties (or so Buffy thought)!
