Pokimane broke down while telling viewers that her beloved cat Mimi had died after falling from a balcony and being rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital. It was the sort of livestream moment nobody should have to share, and certainly not one that needed the internet’s cruellest spectators arriving before the tears had dried.
In a widely circulated clip, the streamer—whose real name is Imane Anys—said balcony access had been left open while cleaners were at the property. Mimi got outside and, as people tried to bring her back in, fell from the balcony. Anys said her assistant immediately took the cat to an emergency vet, where Mimi died.
What Pokimane said happened to Mimi
Anys appeared stunned as she repeated the words “she jumped,” trying to explain an event that had happened with almost no warning. That description should not be treated as evidence that Mimi deliberately launched herself from a dangerous height.
The ASPCA explains that cats usually fall accidentally from windows, terraces and fire escapes. They can become intensely focused on a bird or another distraction, lose their balance, or struggle to grip smooth ledges. Veterinarians see the injuries often enough to call the pattern “high-rise syndrome.”
That distinction matters because a shocked owner’s first account can quickly become a courtroom conducted by strangers. Anys was describing the death of a companion, not presenting a polished incident report. The confirmed core is painfully simple: Mimi got onto the balcony, suffered a fatal fall and received emergency treatment that could not save her.
Mimi was part of Pokimane’s online life
Mimi was familiar to longtime followers through photos and appearances alongside Anys. One especially sweet image showed them wearing matching green frog hats, the cat looking magnificently unimpressed while Pokimane supplied enough joy for both of them.
That gentler side of her public life often gets lost when every update is forced through the creator-drama machine. Even stories about why Pokimane stepped away from Twitch exclusivity or the serious consent questions raised by the Twitch deepfake scandal can become ammunition in long-running fandom wars.
The response became ugly far too quickly
Some viewers offered condolences and shared their own experiences of losing pets. Others immediately searched for a villain, dissected a grieving woman’s phrasing and treated the tragedy as another excuse to relitigate everything they dislike about her—from expensive biscuits to old platform feuds.
POPTOPIC has criticised Pokimane when the evidence warranted it, including the dispute over another streamer’s story about an editor. None of that turns the sudden death of her cat into a victory for the comment section. A person does not forfeit ordinary sympathy because the internet maintains a searchable grievance folder.
There is one useful lesson beyond the grief. Cat owners in apartments should secure balconies and windows with sturdy screens or pet-safe netting, and any cat that falls needs immediate veterinary attention even if it initially appears unhurt. Anys’ assistant did exactly the urgent part recommended by animal-welfare experts.
Mimi was loved, rushed to help and mourned. Pokimane does not owe the internet a perfectly composed performance of grief, a villain selected before the credits, or a debate panel about the worst day of her year. She should be allowed to miss her little frog-hat partner in peace.
