Recent podcast featuring Joel Taslim and Scot Adkins has people wondering whether Johnny Cage is actual in the Mortal Kombat movie.
There’s no mention of Johnny Cage anywhere in the Mortal Kombat movie credits. However, there is a character who is awfully similar to him but he goes by a different name; Cole Young.

We still believe that Johnny Cage has been replaced by a new more relatable and diverse character known as Cole Young (played by Wu Assassins’ Lewis Tan), but now people are wondering whether Johnny Cage actually exists in this universe.
Last month the Indonesian Judo master Joel Taslim, the actor who plays Sub-Zero in the new Mortal Kombat 2021 movie, had a live discussion with Scot Adkins. During their discussion Adkins lets it slip that Scot Adkins is actually in the movie.
“I mean, you have to come back. I really hope that if we have the sequel, I really hope that you’re apart of it. I really hope they have to call you — and this is me and just my opinion — but I really hope you can play Johnny Cage,” an excited Taslim said.
Adkins responded by saying that he is available and is eagerly waiting for that call.
Is Johnny Cage dead?
While some people are speculating that Adkins might play Johnny Cage in a small flashback cameo where he gets killed, the most likely theory is that he is just an unnamed Lin Kuei ninja and that’s why he hopped in call with the Sub-Zero actor.
Simon McQuoid did explicitly state that Cole Young is a brand new character to the Mortal Kombat universe, but he has way too much in common with Johnny Cage. McQuoid also said that they tried to remain true to the canon but did, at points, deviate from it.
There seems to be some romantic interest between Sonya Cage and Cole Young in the movie, but in the game universe Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade end up together and even have a daughter they call Cassie Cage.
There is still a chance that Johnny Cage will be introduced later, or perhaps he’s even dead. Sadly, though, it is very unlikely.
Both the director and Lewis Tan have already strongly hinted that Cole Young is a replacement for Cage, a fully re-imagined character. Even the leak script had no mention of Cage and that script has now been verified to be legitimate.
Is Cole Young a descendent of Scorpion?
Hold up. Things are getting weirder. It has also been confirmed the feud between Scorpion and Sub-Zero is a part of the main plot in the movie. We know that Cole Young is the lead and now there’s some evidence to suggest that he may, in fact, be a descendent of a Lin Kuei ninja, but is it Scorpion or Sub-Zero?
Screen-Rant seems to believe that Cole Young is actually the “real Sub-Zero”, better known as Kuai Liang in the video game franchise. It could make sense, right? I mean Kuai Liang is, after all, the good Sub-Zero. There’s also a scene where Cole Young gets hit so hard that he develops a similar looking scar on his face.
But wouldn’t it make more sense if Cole Young is actually a descendant of Scorpion instead? Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion) was the good guy before he was assassinated by the evil Sub-Zero. We do see an unmasked Hanzo appear to Cole Young in vision in the trailer. What’s even more convicing is that Cole Young sees himself as a deceased Scorpion in the mirror! He also dons his colours later in the movie.
Mortal Kombat hits theatres in exactly two weeks. It will premiere at cinemas world wide on the 15th of April, 2021.
