Free Guy is inspired by Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite

Last week 20th Century Fox premiered the trailer for their upcoming Action/Sci-Fi comedy Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds and it is inspired by two very popular videogames.

Ryan Reynolds’ new movie is an upcoming American science fiction action comedy film directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum), from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn (Ready Player One), and a story by Lieberman.

At first glance Ryan Reynolds’ new film looks like an R-rated version of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One; it is set in a virtual world populated with NPCs and avatars controlled by players. Some of the players featured in this film include popular Twitch streamers Ninja, Pokimane, and Lazarbeam.

Jacksepticeye is also set to star as the popular videogame character Q*Bert in Free Guy.

Perhaps one of the reasons it is so similar to Ready Player One is because the the screenplay is penned by the same guy, Zak Penn.

However, this film is heavily inspired by two of the most popular online videogames out today: Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite.

In the open world video game Free City, a world inspired by Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, Guy, played by Reynolds, is a non-player character working as a bank teller. Thanks to a code developed by programmers Milly and Keys, Guy becomes aware that he is world is game, and takes takes his fate into his own hands, creating a race against time to save the game before the developers pull the plug.

The trailer even kind of looks like a let’s play of for the movie. Ninja, Jacksepticeye, and Pokimane will make guest appearances and a lot Fortnite moments and Easter eggs are allegedly scattered throughout the Free Guy.

Ryan Reynolds’ SciFi/Action movie is rated R and will hit cinemas world wide July 3rd, 2020.
