Johansson doesn’t need de-ageing CGI in Black Widow but got it anyway


The trailer for Black Widow looks insanely awesome, however, Natasha Romanoff looks a little off because of the de-ageing CGI.

Let’s face it, Scarlet Johansson is one of the most beautiful woman in show biz. We often hear people talk about how Keanu Reeves doesn’t seem to age, but in my honest opinion it is the is 35-year-old superhero actress that defies age.

Disney/Marvel released the first-look trailer to the upcoming origin story movie for Black Widow this week and, bar a few grumpy grouches, most people are super hyped.

The trailer gives a taste of some of the high-octane action as well as a sneak peak at teenage Natasha, but what got me all giddy is seeing Stranger Things’ David Harbour as the grizzly, Russian wrestling-looking, Red Guardian.

Despite all the awesome there was something that just didn’t seem right and it was very clearly the anti-ageing CGI that they used on Scarlett Johansson

I understand that this is an origin story and there are scenes where we see teenage Black Widow and majority of the film features a young Black Widow but at times Scarlett Johansson is almost unrecognisable because of the de-ageing special effects and makeup used on the actress.

Scarlett Johansson could pass as a young adult even a teenager with minimal makeup and all the extra effort to make her look young kind of seems pointless and really detracts from her agelessness.

These kind of effects can be very, very effective and are sometimes even required. Scorsese’s The Irishman is a perfect example of ageing/de-ageing effects done well. The director opted to use the effects instead of replacing the irreplaceable star-studded cast. But using these effects on Scarlett Johansson is overkill, let’s face it.
