The new Harry Potter movie in production in 2021 will be exclusive to theatres and not a film adaptation of the Cursed Child, rumours say.
Good news for fans, the new Harry Potter (2021) movie will be an entirely new story written by JK Rowling and will take place before the events of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child and be a “Hogwarts Reunion”.

When the news got out that Warner Bros were starting production on a new Harry Potter movie starring the original cast, many fans assumed that it would simply be a film adaptation of the sequel play Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, but the word on the street it is an entirely new story.
The Cursed Child is canon to Harry Potter universe, just like Fantastic Beasts. However, unlike Fantastic Beasts, The Cursed Child will most likely never — or at least anytime soon — be adapted to film.
The Cursed Child takes place nineteen years after the events of the The Deathly Hallows and follows Harry Potter, now Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, and his younger son, Albus Severus Potter, who is about to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The play was originally marketed as the eighth story in the Harry Potter series, but, according to a source close to Warner Bros, that might change.
“The eighth Harry Potter movie is set before The Cursed Child and JK Rowling will return to write an exclusive screenplay like she did for Fantastic Beasts.” The source explained.
Harry Potter and The Cursed Child wasn’t written by JK Rowling. It was penned by Jack Thorne and only based on the original story.
“It isn’t official yet, but the producers are very interested in making it into a Hogwarts Reunion film with the original cast. Kind of like a last hurrah for Harry, Hermione and Ronald.”
This rumour contradicts another that was reported by WeGotThisCovered last year alleging that the new movie is set 20 years after the events of The Deathly Hallows and is likely to start a new series.
By the looks of things this movie will be once-and-done type of deal, a final encore, if you will. We’re not even likely to see a full published novel for the new movie.
We probably won’t hear more news until after the premiere Fantastic Beasts 3 later this year.
