It’s been 25 years since the Super Mario Bros movie hit the cinemas and today, finally, The Movie Archive found a deleted scene never seen before.
Super Mario Bros movie was a film you either loved or hated, with no exceptions. It took a colourful and cartoon-y video game and turned into a grim post-apocalyptic movie set in Brooklyn New York. A lot of fans absolutely hated this strange change – as Rotten Tomatoes suggests – but I welcomed it. 25 years later, The Movie Archive have discovered a very unique deleted scene that has never been seen before.

On May 15th 2019, the Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive discovered a tape containing an extended rough cut of the 1993 cult film – Super Mario Bros. This version is about 15 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, including new and extended scenes that expand the story and character arcs.
Super Mario Bros movie scene never seen before…
The Movie Archive excited to exclusively debut this never-seen-before footage of one of these scenes, set during the first act while our heroes are still working in Brooklyn, where Mario and Luigi answer the call for a job at the Riverfront Cafe and encounter the Scapelli plumbers – Doug and Mike.
In the Theatrical Version, Mario and Luigi are called to a job at the Riverfront Cafe. But when they arrive they find a Scapelli van is already there. The movie then cuts to Daisy at the Digsite… But we know from the script, the novel, trading cards and such that Mario and Luigi actually enter the Riverfront Cafe and interact with the Scapelli Plumbers, Doug and Mike.
These two are the same goons seen later, sabotaging the dig-site. This scene is notable for two reasons. Firstly, it establishes the full name “Mario Mario” before we reach Dinohattan’s Police Station. ADR Notes advised that this line be changed or removed, likely to leave the reveal for the Police Station. Secondly, this scene is the origin of Mario’s trademark line: “Nobody touches my tools!” This is quoted on the back of the ERTL Toy box and spoken by the oversized Talking Mario toy.
Editor Mark Goldblatt explained that this scene was cut in an effort to move the action to Dinohattan more quickly. Mike and Doug also never returned and never got their comeuppance. Though Scripts suggest they would have been de-evolved like Scapelli, this scene was never filmed.
This rendered their introduction meaningless, even with their brief appearance sabotaging the dig-site. Our goal is to restore the footage for a new definitive home release.
