Disney/Marvel almost lost the rights to Spider-Man last year. The deal fell apart when Kevin Feige refused to include Sony’s Venom in the current cinematic universe.

Tom Holland had multiple cameos in the original Venom movie starring Tom Hardy. Disney/Marvel then forced Sony to cut the scene stating that had not sought approval from the studio to use Marvel’s version of Spider-Man played by Tom Holland.

Marvel Studio hit back at Sony demanding some kind of retribution by trying to renegotiate their active deal in which they upped the ante.

The original Sony/Disney Spider-Man deal.

The original deal was supposed to be a fair 70/30 split but Disney didn’t accept that. They pushed for more and with 100% of merchandise sales, that’s exactly what they got.

After the record breaking success of Avengers: Endgame, Disney thought they had more bargaining power. In a closed-doors meeting Disney allegedly demanded a 50/50 cut, a deal Sony just couldn’t honour if they wanted to remain in the green.

We first believed that this might have been the reason for the walk out, but an insider told us the Disney-Sony fallout mostly happened when Sony was trying to negotiate the inclusion of Venom.

The fallout.

Sony pulled from the deal and took Tom Holland with them, setting the stage for a Venom Vs. Spider-Man Tom Hardy and Tom Holland.

Tom Holland crying
Tom Holland was heartbroken when he heard that Spider-Man deal fell apart.

Holland told reporters that, although he was excited to be with Sony .he was devastated, and even cried, when he heard the announcement because he considered the cast of the Marvel movies his family.

Disney/Marvel later came to their senses and accepted Sony’s original offer which brought Holland’s Spider-Man back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for one last film (not including other cameos).

Sources have now confirmed that Holland will appear in the Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage, however, we will not be seeing Hardy make his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon.

Sources close to Disney claim that the upcoming Spider-Man movie will explain how Marvel’s Spider-Man ends up in Sony’s universe… and it has something to do with the multiverse.

UPDATE: Venom 2 to tease epic clash with Spider-Man!

Both Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield — former Sony Spider-Men — are reported to make an appearance in the upcoming Marvel Spider-Man 3 movie currently titled Home Sweet Home. During a brief scene we are supposed to see Tom Holland get launched into an entire different universe.

Morbius trailer confirms Tom Holland cameo.

Recently the Morbius movie released a trailer that teases MCU connection with an image of Spider-Man graffitied on a wall as well as Michael Keaton’s The Vulture cameo at the end of the trailer. The trailer pretty much confirms that Tom Holland will — at the very least — have a small cameo as Spider-Man in Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage. Possibly even setting up Venom 3 to feature Spider-Man or Venom to appear in a Spider-Man movie.

Venom 2, directed by Andy Serkis and produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and Tencent Pictures, will be in theatres June 2021 with the Spider-Man 3 releasing only a few months later.
