Who plays Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat movie? We might know

Date:

An R-rated Mortal Kombat movie is being filmed in Australia and, for the most part, the entire cast has been revealed, but who plays Johnny Cage?

The top billed cast for the Mortal Kombat movie reboot already has fans excited. If anything, what it proves is that the film makers are aiming for authenticity when it comes to martial arts fight scenes. The majority of actors, bar maybe Australia’s Josh Lawson and Jessica McNamee, are trained martial artists. However, out of all the characters cast so far, one vital character seems to be missing; Johnny Cage.

Did you know?

There is just one actor on the Mortal Kombat cast list whose identity has not yet been revealed and that is Lewis Tan. Lewis Tan is well known for his role as Lu Xin Lee in the Netflix hit original, Wu Assassins. Many fans speculate that Lewis Tan might play Lui Kang’s long lost cousin, Kung Lao, but we are almost certain that, that’s not the case.

If you take a look at the announced cast you will see that this most certainly is a reboot. With the exception of Mileena, played by Sisi Stringer, you have the original Mortal Kombat game characters. Kung Lao isn’t part of the OG squad, he doesn’t make an appearance until after Lui Kang has won the first tournament and, according to the most updated cannon, then he joins to prove he’s Kang’s equal. We may be wrong, of course, but we think we know who plays Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat movie… and if we are right, we might have the coolest version of Cage ever.

Movie version of Johnny Cage inspired by Brandon Lee

If you don’t know Brandon Lee, you don’t know martial arts movies. Brandon is the son of the Kung Fu legend, turned film star, himself; Bruce Lee.

We think the movie version of Johnny Cage will be played by Lewis Tan and his character is inspired by Brandon Bruce Lee.

Below is a picture of Brandon Lee with his wife Eliza Hutton. Kind of looks like Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, right? Jessica McNamee and Lewis Tan are primed to be the main antagonists in the upcoming movie, too. So, there’s that.

Brandon Lee with his wife

In many regards Brandon Lee was just like Johnny Cage; a beloved Hollywood star who, like his father, in spite of his talents in martial arts was never respected as a real fighter. Brandon’s father was sick of being called a fake that actually participated in real fighting tournaments and challenged other martial arts actors to spars. Chuck Norris was bested by the actor but refused to admit it in interview where he claimed that he was holding back because he didn’t want to hurt him

Regardless, Brandon Lee is the perfect inspiration for the movie version of Johnny Cage and, if we’re right on this, then Lewis Tan is the perfect casting choice. Anyone that has watching him in Wu Assassins, I think, would most definitely agree. He has that larger-than-life ego about him and is extremely cheeky. At times you can almost convince yourself that maybe that’s actually one of Johnny Cage’s film roles.

What are your thoughts on Lewis Tan playing Johnny Cage? Excited, or would you prefer to see him play someone like Kung Lao. Let us know in the comments below.
