The Guardians of the Galaxy actress received a lot of backlash from the black community for playing legendary American songwriter Nina Simone in a biopic. Despite standing firm on her decision to play the role, she now regrets it.

The ageless American-Dominican actress played Nina Simon in the 2016 biopic “Nina” and despite receiving backlash from the black community, she said she was proud to have the chance to play such a powerful role.

Zoe Saldana, 42, initially responded the backlash saying, ““I’ll tell you what freedom is to me – Not fear … I mean really, no fear.”

Her response was not well received by Nina’s estate as they don’t acknowledge the actress as a “real black woman.”

American-Dominican actress Zoe Saldana, 42, makes apology yet identifies as a black woman but isn’t “black enough” according to Nina’s estate.

They responded, “Cool story but please take Nina’s name out of your mouth. For the rest of your life.”

Saldana quietly ducked out of the conversation but later addressed the Tweet in an interview with Allure in 2016.

“There’s no one way to be black. I’m black the way I know how to be. You have no idea who I am. I am black. I’m raising black men. Don’t you ever think you can look at me and address me with such disdain,” she told the reporter.

“I thought back then that I had the permission (to play her) because I was a black woman,” Saldana said. “And I am. But it was Nina Simone. And Nina had a life and she had a journey that should have been – and should be – honoured to the most specific detail because she was a specifically detailed individual.”

Now that role is back to haunt her. Zoe Saldana has found herself in the centre of controversy yet again for playing the role of Nina Simone as target as people who aim to “eradicate racism” have her in her targets; they want more than just an apology.

Zoe Saldana crying in Nina apology

Tear-eyed Zoe Saldana is heart-broken and devastated in apology after “Nina” backlash.

What exactly did Zoe Saldanda do wrong? Her skin colour wasn’t dark enough to represent a “real black woman.”

Zoe has been forced to apologise “stealing” the role from a “real black woman” and now admits that she regrets ever having taken the role.

“I should have never played Nina,” Saldana admitted during an interview with Pose creator Steven Canals on Instagram Live this week.

“I should have done everything in my power with the leverage that I had 10 years ago, which was a different leverage, but it was leverage nonetheless,” she continued. “I should have done everything in my power to cast a black woman to play an exceptionally perfect black woman.”

Zoe is not the only one that has had to make a public apology for something they did in the past. Earlier this week Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively apologised for their “racist” wedding which was hosted at a historic 300-year-old plantation — that used to have slaves — in South Carolina.

Zoe Saldana will return to the big screen as Gomora in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 which is currently in pre-production, and is rumoured to play Lieutenant Uhura in an untitled Star Trek sequel.
