Should I download Minecraft Earth right now? Yes! Here’s why

Date:

Minecraft Earth is available for Early Access in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Sweden and Iceland. After spending a day with the app roaming, mining, questing, and building I can highly recommend this game.

If you are a fan of the AR (Augmented Reality) mobile game genre you should be excited for Minecraft Earth. Not only is it an amazing casual mobile gaming experience, it is also a platform for unlimited creativity.

Microsoft and Mojang are excited for us to finally harness the power of augmented reality by bringing the Minecraft universe into the real world, making it a bit more block-tastic!

Their goal is to make Minecraft Earth better over time, so they’re releasing the game in Early Access first, adding more countries each week until we’re worldwide by the end of the year. This will allow them to have people play, test and provide feedback on the game which will help shape the experience into how they want it to be. Early Access is just the beginning as they explore new ideas to add to the experience.

Early Access brings new features that players in the closed beta have yet to play, including:

  • Adventures – small slices of procedurally generated, limited-time Minecraft worlds that you play in augmented reality in life size and are just one of the experiences that are optimised for social multiplayer.
  • New mob variants, smelting and crafting – like the *adorable* Muddy Pig, Moobloom, Jumbo Rabbit and Cluckshroom, we’ll have new friendly and hostile mobs for you to meet. Through smelting, you’ll be able to work ores into ingots and with crafting you’ll get to create items you need (if you have the right materials of course), instead of having to collect the items outright.

Adventures are made possible by two critical Microsoft technologies. First, Azure PlayFab’s dedicated servers enable Minecraft Earth’s multiplayer gameplay by hosting both buildplates and adventures for you. Second, Azure Spatial Anchors (ASA) implement shared experiences and persistence of augmented reality content. So, when you set off to your local park and find an abandoned mine with treasures, Minecraft Earth is using the ASA service to help guide different players to the same adventure.

Should I download Minecraft Earth? Yes. Just remember.. safety first.

After spending just one day with the app, roaming the streets of Sydney, mining blocks, cutting down trees, collecting mobs and building I can honestly say that I’m very excited for the future of Minecraft Earth. Unlike Pokemon Go, there seems to be no real end-game; you can take your experience as far as your imagination allows.

Here are 5 reasons you should download and start playing Minecraft Earth in Early Access right now.

Sense of accomplishment

Large buildplates
Minecraft Earth in Australia now!

In Minecraft Earth you aren’t just mindlessly capturing stuff. Each mined or collected block serves a huge purpose in your gaming experience. Just like in the classic game, each material can be used to craft special items that you can either use for questing and killing mobs or building your home.

There is a real sense of accomplishment in Minecraft Earth. It feels like your own personal dream world where you can visit whenever you have time to kill and slowly build on… think Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

It’s super casual

In the Early Access you have access to one building and one smelting slot. But if you have the necessary ingredients to craft your desired item you can just queue it up by selecting the type and amount you want to make. It will give a countdown timer that reveals how much time til all the items are finished crafting. If you are in a hurry you can spend Rubies (in-game currency) to speed things up. I know what you’re thinking… uugghhh, microtransactions… but really, you can easily find them while wondering around. I’m already at 50 Rubies and that’s almost enough to buy an 8×8 buildplate.

I spent the day collecting and mining so when I got home I just casually queued up all the crafting and smelting stuff while watching the TV. I love it, it is super casual.

No longer a loner

Play Minecraft Earth in Australia with friends.

Whether you are roaming around finding some good loot, on an adventure, or building, you don’t have to do it alone. Minecraft Earth allows people to buddy up with their friends.

If your friend is within eye-shot all you got to do is go into your settings and click join friend and the AR camera will pop up. After looking around a bit the game will recognise the other player and pair you up.
