One of the only things holding Fox back from bringing back the cult-classic “Firefly” is trying to figure out how to ‘reinvent it for today’.
Joss Whedon’s Firefly, despite its cult like following, was cancelled after only one season 2002. Fans weren’t happy and they campaigned to have the show brought back to life and eventually the studio followed up by given them a feature length film.

The feature film “Serenity”, was this continuation, and conclusion, of the television series “Firefly,” in which a group of rebels travels the outskirts of space aboard their ship, Serenity.

Serenity has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 82% and even today is considered to be one of the best Science-Fantasy movies of all time.
Tim Minear, “Firefly” executive producer, recently gave fans a glimmer of hope of a revival when he tweeted a picture of the final day of shooting on Joss Whedon’s beloved cult-classic series.

Joss Whedon then continued to mess with fans when he retweeted a joke saying “wait, we’re cancelled?” posted by Alan Tudyk.

TheWrap asked Minear and, Fox’s president of Entertainment, Michael Thorn, whether they would be interested in bringing back Whedon’s cult-classic Sci-Fantasy show, to which they responded “if we can reinvent it for today.”
“The macro answer is, any time we look at one of our classic titles, if there’s a way to reinvent it for today so it’s as resonant now as the original was, and is, to the fans, we’re wide open,” Thorn told TheWrap. “I loved ‘Firefly,’ personally, and I watched every episode. I didn’t work on it, but I loved the show. It had come up before, but we had ‘The Orville’ on the air and it didn’t make sense for us to have, as a broadcast network who is very targeted, to have two space franchises on our air.”

Thorn explained that bringing back, or rather reinventing, “Firefly” would be a challenging task today, and that he would need to make changes to the story so it’s more acceptable for today’s age. He also discussed how would love to have the entire original cast back but just how difficult that could be considering the former cast’s workload.

“You’re not gonna get everybody back — unless you did something like a limited series, like they did for ‘The X-Files.’ Then maybe you could get these people to come back. ‘Cause Nathan is a little busy doing ‘The Rookie.’ But I also know, ’cause I just texted a little bit with Nathan over the weekend, when I posted those pictures from ‘Firefly’ and he got very sentimental. Everyone who worked on that show dearly loves it and they all still talk to each other. I still see Alan occasionally.”
He hinted that we may in fact see “Firefly” return as a limited series with a few of the original cast making way for an all-new, more diverse, Serenity crew.
