Stan streaming Buffy, Family Guy and HIMYM proves Disney partnership

People panicked when they noticed that Disney was pulling their content of Stan Australia but we now know the intricacies of the Disney/Stan deal.

Why would Disney and Stan Australia announce a partnership only to pull all their content six months later? We feel that the details of the Disney/Stan partnership is much bigger than people anticipate.

Last year Disney announced a partnership deal with Stan Australia and that Marvel, Pixar and Disney classic movies would be exclusive to the Stan. “We believe Stan is the perfect home for Disney content,” a Disney spokesperson said. However, 6 months later Disney started pulling content off Stan just ahead of their own streaming service launch.

When the partnership deal was first announced little was known about Disney Plus (Disney+), but surely both Stan Australia were very aware of Disney plan to launch their own service. So why bother with this kind of partnership deal at all.

We initially believed that the partnership might entail some kind of shared infrastructure. Maybe Disney would piggyback of Stan Australia’s already established high quality service at least during launch. We speculated that we might even see a bundle deal that includes both services much like the HULU/Disney+/ESPN deal currently available in the U.S.A.

Last night Stan Australia uploaded 5 Disney owned I.P.s to their service: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Family Guy, Grey’s Anatomy, and How I Met Your Mother. Like The Simpsons, Buffy, Family Guy and How I Met Your Mother used to be Fox properties but they are now under Disney ownership after the acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Family friendly only content on Disney Plus

Disney Plus is a family friendly service so you won’t find any mature content on there. Instead Disney is offloading Fox’s and ABC’s mature content onto partnered services like HULU and Stan Australia. That’s why you’ll find The Simpsons on Disney Plus (Disney+) and Family Guy on Stan Australia.

We can expect to see loads of Fox and ABC content appear on Stan Australia in the coming months like American Dad and Angel. If you haven’t already you should head on over to the Stan page and sign up for a free 30 day trial.
