Godot Bans Paying Supporters with Conservative/Christian Views

Conservatives called “filth of humanity” and permanently banned from using game development engine by Godot Foundation.

The Godot Engine, a popular open-source game development platform, has faced growing criticism over its handling of political discourse on social media, with accusations of censorship and exclusion of users holding conservative or Christian views. The controversy erupted when the official Godot X (formerly Twitter) account made several politically charged posts, including one declaring, “Apparently game engines are woke now.” The post ignited a backlash from users who asked the platform to remain neutral, leading to some a lot of people, even paying supporters, being blocked.

Many of those affected by the blocks were long-term financial supporters of the engine, including high-level backers. One notable example is a user who was banned after expressing mild dissatisfaction with Godot’s direction, raising concerns among the community that their support was being overlooked in favor of politically motivated actions. The blocking extended to multiple users on GitHub and X, many of whom accused “woke” Godot of alienating supporters based on their political stance.

Further fueling the controversy, Godot management did not just block these Titanium-level backers on X; they also banned them from the official Discord server and blocked them on GitHub. These backers, who contribute over AUD$160 per month, were primarily asking for bug fixes and improvements to the engine instead of political statements. Their banning left many supporters feeling alienated, as their financial contributions seemed to count for little when they expressed dissent.

The situation escalated further when a moderator of an unofficial Godot-related Discord channel posted inflammatory remarks, calling critics “insecure cowards” and “the filth of humanity.” Although these comments were made by a non-official moderator, they added fuel to the controversy surrounding Godot’s community management.

In response to the backlash, the Godot Foundation issued a statement acknowledging that some users had been blocked in error but defended the actions of the community managers, stating that the blocks were necessary to maintain a safe and inclusive environment. However, this apology was met with further criticism from the community, as many pointed out that the blocked users had only expressed mild criticism, not harassment. Additionally, despite many of these users having donated thousands of dollars to the project, including high-level backers, they were required to appeal their bans through a formal process. This move intensified frustrations, with many questioning the fairness of the moderation approach and the treatment of long-term financial supporters.

This incident has sparked widespread debate within the game development community, with some developers now questioning their future support of Godot due to concerns about the platform’s governance and approach to free speech. The company’s poor handling of criticism has even resulted in it getting its own Know Your Meme page.
