The latest Grand Theft Auto VI leaks are causing more than spoiler concerns, with leaked footage appearing noticeably less impressive than scenes previously shown in Rockstar’s official trailers.
One of the most discussed clips reportedly shows Lucia leaving prison, a sequence already featured prominently in Rockstar’s marketing. However, fans comparing the leaked build with the trailer footage have pointed to flatter lighting, reduced environmental detail and noticeably less visual polish.

Some players have even claimed to be cancelling their pre-orders as a result.
Rockstar defenders argue that development footage should never be compared directly with finished promotional material, suggesting the leaks could originate from an older or unfinished build.
The leaker disputes that explanation.
According to CyberLeek, the footage comes from a relatively recent version of the game, reportedly no more than several months old. The leaker has also claimed that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) remains far from finished and may not be ready for its November 19 release.
Neither claim has been independently verified.
Rockstar has responded to the leaks by describing the situation as “heartbreaking” and insisting development is nearing completion. However, the company has offered little direct response to the concerns emerging from the footage itself.
That silence has also frustrated players questioning Rockstar’s increasingly digital approach.
While some optimistic fans have speculated that Rockstar may be deliberately holding back a traditional physical release announcement to maximise digital sales — potentially encouraging collectors to purchase the game twice — there is currently little evidence supporting that theory.
The broader direction of both PlayStation and Xbox toward digital distribution has instead fuelled concerns that Rockstar simply has no intention of releasing a conventional disc version.
Meanwhile, Take-Two has taken a much more aggressive approach behind the scenes.
The publisher has pursued copyright strikes and legal action against accounts discussing or distributing leaked material, while subpoenas targeting platforms including Discord have reportedly sought identifying information connected to communities containing more than 100,000 users.
That does not mean Take-Two has obtained the identities of 100,000 fans, but the breadth of the requests has nevertheless raised significant privacy concerns.
The leaks also appear to reinforce another long-running concern: Grand Theft Auto Online may not be included with GTA VI at launch at all. References within the leaked material seemingly treat the next version of GTA Online as a separate product, lending weight to speculation that Rockstar plans to sell—or potentially gate—it as a standalone experience. While that has not yet been formally confirmed, it would fit Take-Two’s increasingly aggressive push toward recurring digital revenue and could explain why Rockstar has been unusually vague about exactly what GTA VI buyers are getting for their money.
Take-Two shares have also suffered during the leak controversy, although attributing those losses entirely to the leaks would be difficult.
Some observers have additionally questioned whether Rockstar’s unusually public response was influenced by commercial partners, including Netflix, which secured exclusive early access to upcoming GTA VI promotional material.
There is currently no evidence Netflix forced Rockstar to make its statement.
Still, Rockstar’s problem is no longer simply stopping the leaks.
It now has to convince increasingly nervous consumers that the game they pre-ordered still resembles the one they were sold.
