Sony promote Mercedes-Benz in PlayStation Play Has No Limits ad

Date:

Sony promote brand new Mercedes-Benz SLG AMG in their bizarre future scene-cyberpunk PlayStation “Play Has No Limits” ad.

Sony/PlayStation are no strangers to making weird as commercials to promote their products. Who remembers that creepy living baby doll commercial for the PlayStation 3? Well, the new Sony ad for the PlayStation 5 makes us want a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG more than anything else.

Today Sony Interactive Entertainment were admittedly very pleased to debut its 2021 brand spot for PlayStation, “PlayStation – Play Has No Limits”.

“Welcome to the city where play is elevated to extraordinary new heights. Where every move is crucial and the game means everything,” a Sony spokesperson said regarding the new brand ad.

“This new film for Sony Interactive Entertainment, the maker of PlayStation, takes the viewer on a journey through a city like none other. A world that is uniquely PlayStation and shows what can happen when play is taken to an unprecedented level.”

The film tells the story of two rival Kings, who battle in through an epic game and follows the progress of a Pawn, the most unassuming piece on the board, as she makes her way through the city. On her way she encounters different challenges posed by the opposition, but ultimately makes her way to the rival King’s penthouse to win the game for her team.

However, a lot of people fail to see what this trailer has to do with Sony or the PlayStation. Is Sony teasing a new online world similar to PlayStation Home? Who knows. More people seem to be interested in that beautiful looking Mercedes-Benz that the “Black Queen” rocks up in towards the end. Why is it even in the trailer?

The short film/PlayStation brand ad is directed by Francois Rousselet. Although the film borrows heavily from classic action movies such as The Dark Knight and The Fifth Element it also has some sneaky product placements — I know, it is pretty strange to see a product placement inside an ad.

Aside from the occasional PlayStation game posters that appear in the backdrop, the “PlayStation – Play Has No Limits” director, Francois Roussel, also threw in some subtle product placements, specifically for Nike and Mercedes-Benz.

A keen-eyed Nike enjoyer will spot the custom made white Nike sneakers that the short film’s protagonist, but what most people were focused on was the 2021 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with the falcon/butterfly doors.

This Mercedes SLS AMG is priced at about USD$500K and is a 6.2L V8. It has been recorded doing 0 – 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 315 km/h. Even today, a well-driven SLS Black would require the ultimate AMG GT-R to keep it honest. But why is it in in the PlayStation trailer?

Nope. Sony aren’t teasing Gran Turismo. They could have quite easily teased their concept Vision-S car in the trailer but they didn’t. The reason why the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and the custom Nikes, are in the trailer is because Francois Rousselet has previously worked with both of these brands and has managed to sneak them into to Sony’s brand spot.
