They Bullied Her to Death–And Reddit Let it Happen

Mikayla Raines, lovingly known as ‘Fox Girl’ on YouTube, should be remembered for what she gave the world: the largest fox rescue in the United States. A place of healing, safety, and second chances for animals that would’ve otherwise been slaughtered or left to rot in a cage. Her videos were wholesome, filled with joy and educational content. People smiled watching rescued foxes dance around her, snuggle into her lap, or let out those adorable high-pitched yelps. She was doing something real. Something meaningful.

But none of that was enough to protect her.

Mikayla became the target of obsessive online hate from a corner of Reddit known as a “snark subreddit”—forums designed to pick apart people’s lives with smug cruelty. These aren’t satire pages or even critical discussion threads. These are coordinated digital mobs who stalk public figures, share intimate details about them, harass their families, and try to ruin their lives. And they do it all while Reddit sits back and lets it happen.

Snark Subreddits Shouldn’t Exist.

For Mikayla, the harassment became relentless. Why? Because she had an OnlyFans. That was it. She dared to fund her sanctuary in part through a legal, adult platform, and that triggered a tidal wave of hatred.

People in the animal sanctuary community, many of whom she once worked with or supported, turned on her. Some printed her images and mailed them to her friends and family. Others tried to blackmail her. There were Reddit threads entirely dedicated to mocking her appearance, questioning her morals, and pushing the narrative that she didn’t “deserve” to be the face of animal rescue.

They didn’t just gossip. They hunted her.

And a few weeks ago, Mikayla Raines took her own life.

Her husband and co-founder, Ethan, later posted an emotional video, calling out the constant bullying she endured. He said it was jealousy. That people resented her popularity, her beauty, her success. But they didn’t just want to bring her down—they wanted to destroy her.

And they did.

Snark subreddits have been around for years, hiding behind sarcastic usernames and thin disclaimers. But the reality is uglier.

These are not communities of “critics.” They are digital lynch mobs.

They’ve gone after countless creators, especially women. When Ethan Klein, a Jewish podcast host and father of two, became a target, snark users coordinated false reports to CPS. Authorities actually showed up at his house, investigating baseless claims—just because a Reddit mob thought it would be funny to mess with his family.

It happens again and again. These subreddits mock addiction, mental illness, disability, and poverty. They dig up personal addresses. They repost private pictures and stolen content. And when someone breaks, they move on to the next.

What’s worse is Reddit’s refusal to act.

You can get banned from Reddit instantly for criticizing extremist ideologies or daring to voice a conservative opinion. But these hate forums? They’re allowed to thrive. Moderators pretend they enforce rules. They don’t. They use “free speech” as a shield while breaking Reddit’s own terms of service—bullying, doxxing, inciting harassment, and sharing revenge porn.

And nothing happens.

No bans. No warnings. No accountability.

The admins know what’s happening. But they protect these communities—maybe because they drive traffic. Maybe because Reddit doesn’t care.

Mikayla was 29. She loved animals. She saved lives. She had a husband who adored her and a future still unfolding. And she was harassed until she couldn’t take it anymore.

Snark culture isn’t “funny.” It isn’t “just the internet.” It’s real people doing real damage. And when someone dies, everyone suddenly acts surprised. But they saw it coming. We all did.

So what now?

Reddit needs to ban these subreddits permanently. They serve no purpose except to destroy. There is no “community value” in turning human pain into content. There is no justification for stalking women and mocking the way they look, talk, or earn a living.

Snark isn’t harmless. It’s poison.

And if Reddit won’t clean up its platform, then maybe it’s time others start holding them accountable. Because Mikayla (Fox Girl) deserved better. And the next victim—whoever they are—does too.
