Warner Bros planned for Joker to be in The Batman (2022)

Date:

Warner Bros insider claims that the studio made plans to make Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker into a villain in the upcoming The Batman (2022) movie.

According to a source close to Warner Bros, producers pushed to combine Joker and The Batman (2022) universe after Todd Phillips’ villain origin story was a smash hit. Could the recent reshoots have something to do with the upcoming sequel?

Joker 2 has (kinda-sorta) been confirmed. Although Warner Bros haven’t officially announced it, the studio confirmed Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix are interesting in returning for a sequel. However, this time Phoenix reportedly wants to join Phillips at the writer’s table.

It’s no lie that the current DC cinematic universe is a big mess. The Batman and Joker eventually need to meet for the epic rivalry; in a sense, they complete each other. Joker was initially supposed to be a one-and-done type of deal and not bleed into any existing cinematic universe — but according to a source, plans have since changed.

If The Batman 2022 (starring Robert Pattinson) and Joker (starring Joaquin Phoenix) both get sequels then this cinematic universe will get even messier, that is if they don’t start tying things up. There are currently two Batmans (can’t believe I pluralised the caped crusader), two Jokers and three (even four if you count the Snyderverse) separate universes: Batfleck (now retired) and Battinson, and then Leto’s emo Joker and Phoenix’s one. The problem, though, is that Reeves’ The Batman does not have a Joker and Phillips’ Joker does not have a Batman. It would make things stupidly complex to create brand new characters for each universe. And, from what we’ve been told, Warner Bros are aware of this issue.

Shortly after Joker’s box office success Warner Bros started planning to combine Reeves’ and Phillips’ visions, the source said.

“The only reason it wasn’t done sooner was because they weren’t sure whether Phoenix would stick around for another film. They already had to recast Ben Affleck, and they didn’t want to have to go through that again. But now Phoenix appears super excited to do a sequel, so they really want to combine both films,” the source revealed.

Matt Reeves shooting extra Batman scenes for Joker tie-in?
Joker 2 (Phoenix) and The Batman (Pattinson) to share a storyline?

The source alleged that Warner Bros had given Phillips strict instruction not to reveal to much about any other canonical characters except for the Joker.

“Phillips’ even refrained from using the name Alfred Pennyworth [played by Douglas Hodge] in the script’s dialogue. You won’t see anyone actually call him Alfred, at all. This way they have an excuse if the same actor is not cast in The Batman, they can just say it was some other servant,” the source claimed.

Rumour has it that the Warner Bros were filming extra scenes in Glasgow and New York that with Pattinson that are “significant and will add a lot” to the film. Could it be that these extra scenes are tie-ins to Todd Phillip’s Joker 2 starring Joaquin Phoenix? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Despite many delays, Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022) starring Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, and Zoe Kravitz is still set to premiere on March 4th, 2022, but Warner Bros have not confirmed whether Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) will be featured.
