SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3X Wireless Review – Surprisingly Perfect for More Than Just Gaming

I’ve gone through my fair share of headsets—cheap ones, premium ones, wired, wireless, Bluetooth, you name it. Some overheat your ears like a microwave burrito. Some feel like a neck brace halfway through a gaming session. So, when I got my hands on the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3X Wireless, I was cautiously optimistic. SteelSeries has been in the game for a while, and their Arctis line has always carried a reputation for being solid all-rounders. The Nova 3X, though, might just be my new gold standard.

This isn’t just another “gamer” headset covered in RGB and edgy branding. It’s sleek, lightweight, and—most importantly—functional across a variety of platforms. Whether you’re on Xbox, PC, or even just commuting with a phone and Spotify in tow, the Nova 3X handles it like a champ.

What’s With the X? Let Me Explain

Before diving into what makes the Nova 3X great, I need to clarify something that confused me at first—the difference between the “X” and “P” models.

SteelSeries makes two main versions of the Nova 3: the 3X for Xbox and the 3P for PlayStation. You’d think the differences would just be branding, right? Not quite. The “X” version is universally better in terms of compatibility. It connects to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iPhone, and—here’s the kicker—Windows 11 without needing extra drivers or dongles. It just works.

The “P” version, while tailored for PlayStation, does not natively support Xbox. So if you bounce between platforms like I do, the X is absolutely the way to go. It’s one of those rare cases where the Xbox-labeled accessory is the more versatile choice for PC users too.

Build Quality and Design – Lightweight but Not Flimsy

As someone who (sometimes) wear glasses and has a fairly small-sized head, I’m always nervous about headset pressure. Some clamp like a vice; others slip off if you so much as nod. The Nova 3X hits the sweet spot. It’s featherlight—about 260 grams—but doesn’t feel fragile or plasticky. The ski goggle-style headband is back, and thank God for that. It distributes weight evenly across your skull, and you can wear it for hours without getting sore spots.

The earcups rotate 90 degrees, which makes them perfect to slip into a bag or around your neck. And they’re coated in soft, breathable fabric that doesn’t turn your ears into saunas.

Available colours

SteelSeries offers a few colors too—standard matte black for the stealthy look, or aqua if you want a little more personality. I went with the lavender (with a matching mouse), but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t eyeing that aqua finish.

Sound Quality – Balanced, Clean, and Customizable

Now for the meat: the audio.

Straight out of the box, the Nova 3X sounds great. It doesn’t try too hard to boost the bass or artificially crisp up the highs. Instead, you get a balanced sound profile that works equally well for gaming, music, and even video calls.

But where it really shines is in customization. SteelSeries’ GG software lets you dig deep with an onboard 10-band EQ and over 100 professionally tuned gaming profiles. I loaded up the “Warzone Footsteps Boost” preset just for kicks, and it legitimately helped me pick out enemies creeping up on me in Call of Duty. There’s also a setting for Fortnite, Apex Legends, Valorant, and more.

The app also lets you control your mic input, sidetone (how much of your own voice you hear), and even toggle on spatial audio for supported games. It’s like a cheat code for immersion.

Standout Features – Dual Wireless Is a Game-Changer

Here’s where I really fell in love with this headset: dual wireless connectivity. You can connect it via 2.4GHz for low-latency gaming and Bluetooth for media or calls—at the same time. I’ve taken calls on Discord through Bluetooth while still hearing game audio on my PC. No lag, no fuss. It’s perfect for anyone who games while staying semi-reachable.

Great for travel

The mic deserves a mention too. It’s a ClearCast Gen 2 bidirectional noise-cancelling microphone, and my friends on Discord said it sounds “way better” than what I was using before. It’s also fully retractable and detachable, so if you just want to use these as Bluetooth headphones at the gym or while traveling, you’re not stuck looking like a call center rep.

Battery life is another highlight. I got around 30 hours using 2.4GHz, and over 40 hours on Bluetooth. I charged it once at the start of the week and didn’t think about it again.

Price vs Quality – An Easy Win

At around $199 AUD, you’re getting premium wireless performance for a mid-range price. When you consider the multi-platform support, dual wireless modes, app customization, and overall build quality, this becomes a no-brainer.

If you were considering dropping $150–$200 on something “fancier,” don’t. This thing punches way above its weight class. The only real competitor here is another SteelSeries headset, and even then, you’re paying more for features like ANC that most gamers don’t actually need.

Final Thoughts – Perfect Travel Buddy

The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3X Wireless surprised me. It’s lightweight, durable, and has a sleek design that doesn’t scream “I’m a gamer” when you wear it in public. With 2.4GHz wireless for latency-free gaming, Bluetooth for convenience, and support for basically every platform you care about, it’s become my go-to headset—not just for gaming, but for travel, the gym, and even listening to podcasts at night.

You won’t find a better all-in-one wireless headset at this price. Whether you’re deep in a late-night ranked match, zoning out on the treadmill, or just working from your laptop, the Nova 3X fits in effortlessly. I didn’t think I’d use it this much—but now, I can’t imagine not having it in my bag.
