I Regret Wasting Money on the Google TV Streamer

If you’re considering a streaming device to boost your TV’s capabilities, think twice before picking up the Google TV Streamer.

Although this device appears promising on the surface with its extra storage, RAM, and sleek design, it’s riddled with frustrating flaws that make it hard to justify its price tag.

Streaming devices have become increasingly popular, often replacing full-fledged smart TVs. They’re typically smaller, more portable, and easier to update, allowing users to integrate various streaming services without replacing their whole TV. The Google TV Streamer seemed like it might set a new standard with its purportedly powerful hardware. However, after nearly a month of use, I wish I hadn’t bought it.

The Google TV Streamer initially attracted me with its 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, far surpassing most competitors like the Chromecast and even rival devices like Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K, which offer less memory and storage. I expected smooth, lag-free performance and the ability to download apps without storage anxiety. However, my experience didn’t live up to the hype. Despite the boosted specs, including the MediaTek processor, the Streamer struggles with slow performance and clunky navigation, making those specs feel wasted.

The remote control was another letdown. At 5.4 inches, it’s awkward to hold and feels cheap, with a protruding navigation pad that makes accurate typing nearly impossible. Trying to navigate through menus often leads to accidental button presses, and while it includes voice search, using it requires extra setup steps, like linking to Google Home and enabling access to personal information. Even when I got voice search configured, it worked only intermittently, often failing to return any results or even crashing the device altogether.

Using the Google TV Streamer in a family setting is another hassle. Each family member must sign in to their own Google account for access to YouTube or any movies purchased on Google Play, as these are locked to individual accounts. This creates an added burden for families or roommates who might want to keep their accounts separate while still sharing a device. Moreover, these accounts require an active internet connection to access purchased movies, meaning downloaded content isn’t available offline—a major inconvenience that undermines the device’s supposed storage advantage.

Setting up the device was no walk in the park, either. Within my first week, I was unexpectedly logged out of streaming services multiple times and faced a persistent “No Internet Connection” error, even though my Wi-Fi was working fine. After troubleshooting with no luck, I eventually had to factory reset the device and reconfigure everything—a time-consuming process I’d hoped to avoid in a modern streaming box.

The Google TV Streamer’s VPN compatibility was also hit or miss. While it claims to work with VPNs, my experience showed unreliable results. Access to international services was spotty at best, with frequent connection drops, making it an unreliable choice for travelers or those looking to access content across regions.

The device itself is lightweight and slim, which may sound appealing, but it’s so light that my HDMI cables, which are more substantial than the box itself, occasionally shift the device out of place. I ended up having to tape it down just to keep it steady—a disappointing design oversight, especially for a AUD$160 device that’s supposed to be an upgrade from Google’s previous Chromecast model.

Ultimately, the extra RAM and storage mean little when the performance is sluggish, and the convenience factor fails in so many areas. For a cheaper price, the Fire TV Stick 4K offers a far more user-friendly experience, with a better remote and faster performance. If you’re looking for a streaming device that doesn’t come with all these frustrating flaws, skip the Google TV Streamer and opt for a more reliable alternative like Amazon’s Firestick. The Google TV Streamer may look like an appealing option on paper, but in practice, it’s nothing more than a waste of money.
