SteelSeries Rival 3 Wireless Review – It Matches My Headset and Might Outlive Civilization

I wasn’t planning to fall in love with a budget gaming mouse, but here we are. The SteelSeries Rival 3 Wireless came into my setup as kind of a practical decision—I wanted something wireless, reliable, and not ugly. What I didn’t expect was to get a mouse that feels tailor-made for someone like me, right down to the color.

I got the lavender version, and yes, it matches my Nova 3X headset perfectly. Not to be shallow, but aesthetics matter to me. If I’m going to spend hours gaming, editing, or working, I want my gear to look good—and this does. Clean, minimal, with just a bit of RGB on the scroll wheel. Classy, not flashy.

But of course, looks aren’t everything. Comfort and performance matter more, especially when it comes to competitive games where your aim is life or death (in-game, I mean… mostly). I have pretty small hands, and a lot of mice feel either too long or too chunky for me. The Rival 3 Wireless, though, fits like a glove. It’s light without being flimsy, and I can comfortably claw grip it for long sessions without my fingers cramping up or slipping. The materials feel solid too—not that cheap plastic gloss you get with low-end mice. This actually feels like it could survive a couple drops… or maybe a full-blown desk rage moment (don’t worry, I haven’t tested that part yet).

Setting it up was a breeze. I popped in the dongle for the 2.4GHz connection, flipped the switch, and that was it—instantly recognized by Windows 11, no drivers, no hassle. I’ve also tested it with Bluetooth on my laptop, and it paired just as quickly. There’s even a compartment inside the mouse to store the dongle, which is a small touch but a smart one. I’ve lost so many of those little USB dongles over the years, and this is the first mouse I’ve owned that actually tries to help me not be an idiot about it.

Let’s talk performance—because I’ve tested this thing where it counts. I played several hours of Rainbow Six Siege X and Call of Duty, and honestly, I didn’t feel like I was at any disadvantage compared to my usual setup. Sure, it doesn’t have the ridiculous 8K polling rate of some ultra-premium mice, but I’ve always found those to be a bit overkill anyway. With the right settings—1000Hz polling, tuned CPI, and SteelSeries’ software tweaking—this mouse is more than capable of keeping up in fast-paced, high-pressure matches. I didn’t feel any lag or jitter. And more importantly, I didn’t feel like I was thinking about my mouse during a match. It just worked. That’s when you know it’s good.

Comfort, for me, directly impacts aim. If my hand is fighting the shape or weight of a mouse, I’ll miss shots. Simple as that. But with the Rival 3 Wireless, everything feels natural. I don’t have to overgrip it. I’m not repositioning my hand mid-game. And since it runs on AAAs, you can even take one battery out to reduce weight. I haven’t needed to—I kind of like the little extra heft—but it’s nice to have the option.

Battery life is another standout. I’ve only been using it for a few days, so I haven’t tested it fully yet, but it’s supposed to last up to 400 hours on Bluetooth and 200+ on wireless. Judging by how little the battery indicator has moved, I believe it. And from what I’ve heard from others, this mouse lasts longer than some people’s relationships. Honestly, if this thing dies on me in the next few weeks, I’ll be surprised. If it survives the next nuclear war, I won’t.

Customization through the SteelSeries GG software is simple. You can adjust CPI, polling rate, remap buttons, and even save different profiles. I’ve kept things pretty basic so far, but I appreciate that the software is lightweight and doesn’t try to install a million background processes.

Oh—and let’s not forget the price. I got mine for around AUD$120 (on sale now at JB HI-FI), and I’m still a little stunned that this is a “budget” mouse. It outperforms some mice I’ve used that cost nearly twice as much. For anyone looking for something affordable but still reliable enough for serious gaming—or just everyday work—this is the sweet spot.

So, final verdict? The SteelSeries Rival 3 Wireless is my new everyday mouse. It’s cute, comfortable, precise, and shockingly good for competitive play. I’ll keep testing it over the next few weeks, and if anything changes, I’ll update this review. But for now, this thing’s an absolute win—and yes, it definitely earns a permanent spot in my lavender-colored gaming kingdom.

Next up: figuring out how to stop buying every matching peripheral SteelSeries releases. Pray for me.
