The Fifth Element (1997)

Arguably one of the best Sci-Fi movies of our time, The Fifth Element ticks all the boxes for those needing an Alita fix.

Played by Mila Jovavich, Leeloominaï Lekatariba Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat De Sebat (A.K.A “Leeloo”), in a lot of ways, reminds us a lot of the Battle Angel. She is one of the Supreme Beings of the Universe. She was sent to Earth in corporeal form to become the Fifth Element, the final piece of a powerful weapon to destroy the Great Evil.

Short synopsis: Korben Dallas, a cab driver, tries to secure four mystical stones and a mysterious fifth element that alone can defeat a cosmic evil force during an apocalyptic war.

Serenity (2005)

From the mind of Joss Whedon, the guy who brought us one of the greatest female heroes of all time — Buffy — comes Serenity.

Serenity is the swan song to the cult classic television Firefly, that was sadly cancelled after just one season. Fans were outraged and demanded another season. Eventually the studios caved and gave fans one last feature film. If fan outrage works, then perhaps there is a chance for an Alita sequel?

Short synopsis: In this continuation of the television series Firefly, a group of rebels travels the outskirts of space aboard their ship, Serenity, outside the reach of the Alliance, a sinister regime that controls most of the universe. After the crew takes in Simon (Sean Maher) and his psychic sister, River (Summer Glau), whom he has just rescued from Alliance forces, they find themselves being pursued by the Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an Alliance agent who will stop at nothing to find them.

Wonder Woman (2017)

Step aside Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman is a female superhero movie done right! This action packed, masterfully directed, superhero epic stars Gal Gadot as the amazonian war princess who travels to the new world to save mankind from themselves.

I’m sure most Alita stans have already seen Wonder Woman and agree that this movie holds its own when it comes to the hall of fame of superhero movies an deserves a spot a long-side Alita in one of the best female lead superhero movies.

Short synopsis: Princess Diana of an all-female Amazonian race rescues US pilot Steve. Upon learning of a war, she ventures into the world of men to stop Ares, the god of war, from destroying mankind.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Before he brought us Alita: Battle Angel, the godlike visionary we mere mortals call James Cameron, made a little movie called Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Heard of it? Of course you have!

Terminator 2: Judgement Day is on top of most ‘greatest sci-fi action movies of all time’ lists on the internet… and for a good reason.

This movie is, simply put, just bad ass! Sarah Connor is one of the coolest female leads in cinema history, and her motherly pride to do whatever it takes to protect her son, John, brings the feels just as much as it brings the epic.

Fun fact, Terminator 2: Judgement Day was well ahead of its time in terms of visual effects… we shouldn’t be surprised, though; James Cameron is a visionary god!

Short synopsis: A terminator is set on a mission to kill Sarah’s son, John Connor. However, another cyborg, who was once after Sarah’s life, has now been assigned to protect him.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Want a movie that is both passionately romantic and spectacularly epic? Then look no further than Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

As Nell Minow puts it, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a story about “two sets of star-crossed lovers who face enormous obstacles, within themselves as well as those imposed by the outside world.”

This film doesn’t just have one strong female role, it has many. It is features some incredible Alita-esque fight scenes that will blow you away.

Short synopsis: Master Li, a warrior, gives his jade sword to his lover Yu Shu Lien in order to keep it safe. However, when the sword is stolen, Li embarks on a mission to find his sword.
