Disney are bringing back the classic Christmas movie Home Alone and they’ve cast Archie Yates (Jojo Rabbit) as Kevin McCallister (or Max Mercer) but is he the right choice?
Now that the Mouse House have their paws on the entirety of Fox’s catalogue after they acquired the studio in 2019, they’re now trying to revive and reboot classic movies and shows. But fans fear they are just ruining their favourite classics. Does Home Alone really need a reboot and, if so, is Archie Yates really the perfect casting option for Home Sweet Home Alone?
Since acquiring Fox, Disney has been working on a Home Alone reboot. The reboot of the classic Christmas movie will premiere exclusively on Disney Plus just ahead of Christmas this year. The film’s exact title “Home Sweet Home Alone” was revealed last Thursday. It will premiere on November 12th.
Additionally, the report included a complete cast list for the film, which is directed by Dan Mazer (Dirty Grandpa). As previously disclosed, Archie Yates, who starred alongside Roman Griffin Davis in Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, will take on the iconic role of Max Mercer (formally Kevin McCallister), once played by bright-eyed child-star Macauley Culkin.
Aisling Bea, Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Devin Ratray, Ally Maki, and Chris Parnell are all on board.
Although Disney’s decision to cast 12-year-old Archie Yates in Home Sweet Home Alone is being praised by fans of Jojo Rabbit, those who are unfamiliar with the young actor or his work feel that a reboot is completely unnecessary and they certainly see Yates replacing Culkin in their favourite childhood Christmas movie.
Love it or hate it, both Home Alone 1 & 2 are among the most popular Christmas movies. According to an annual report they were the most streamed movies during the 2020 holidays. Most retailers also sell out on Home Alone DVDs around the holiday season, too.
Home Sweet Home Alone will have to compete with the original films on Disney Plus when it premieres this November 12th.
